If you want your funeral paid for before it is needed, you will meet two products: final expense insurance and pre-need funeral plans. They solve the same problem in different ways.
How a pre-need plan works
You make an agreement with a funeral home for specific goods and services, and pay in a lump sum or in installments. The money is typically held in a trust or used to buy an insurance policy that the funeral home is paid from. Rules on how the money must be protected vary by state.
Some contracts guarantee the price of the items you chose. Others do not, and your family pays any difference. Ask which kind you are being offered.
How final expense insurance works
You buy a small whole life policy and name a beneficiary. When you die, the insurance company pays that person in cash. They can use it at any funeral home, in any state, and for costs a funeral home does not provide.
| Question | Pre-need plan | Final expense insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Who is paid? | The funeral home | Your beneficiary |
| Can the money be used elsewhere? | Usually limited to the contract | Yes, for anything |
| Are prices locked in? | Only if the contract guarantees them | No. The benefit is a fixed dollar amount |
| What if you move or change your mind? | Depends on the contract and state law | The policy stays with you |
| Health questions? | Usually none | Usually yes, unless guaranteed issue |
Questions to ask before signing a pre-need contract
- Which prices are guaranteed and which are not?
- Where is my money held, and who protects it?
- What happens if the funeral home closes or changes owners?
- Can I transfer the plan if I move?
- What refund do I get if I cancel?
Which is better?
A pre-need plan suits someone who knows exactly which funeral home and service they want and plans to stay in the area. Final expense insurance suits someone who wants flexibility, wants money available for bills beyond the funeral or may move.
They can also work together. Whatever you choose, tell your family what you have arranged and where the paperwork is.
