Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about final expense insurance, applying, costs and claims.

Eligibility and health

I have some health issues. Will I be turned down?

Not necessarily. Many health conditions are accepted on policies that ask health questions. Depending on your answers you may be offered full coverage from the first day, a policy with a waiting period, or a guaranteed issue policy that asks no health questions.

Is there a medical exam?

Most final expense policies do not need one. You answer health questions and the insurer may check prescription and insurance records with your permission.

What ages can apply?

Most insurers offer final expense policies from about age 50 to 85. Some accept applicants in their 40s. The exact range depends on the insurance company, the policy and your state.

Can I buy a policy for my parent?

Yes, with their knowledge and consent. Your parent must take part in the application and sign it, and you need an insurable interest, which a child normally has.

Coverage and cost

How much does it cost?

The premium depends on your age, sex, health, tobacco use, state and the amount of coverage. We give you quotes based on your own details at no cost.

Will my premium go up as I get older?

On a standard whole life final expense policy the premium is fixed when the policy is issued. Confirm this in the policy you are offered.

Can the money be used for bills other than the funeral?

Yes. Your beneficiary receives the benefit in cash and can use it for medical bills, debts or any other expense.

Is accidental death covered?

Life insurance covers death from accidents as well as illness, subject to the exclusions written in the policy. On policies with a waiting period, accidental death is often paid in full from the start while death from illness is limited at first. Check the terms of the specific policy.

Claims and changes

How does my family make a claim?

Your beneficiary contacts the insurance company, completes a claim form and sends a certified copy of the death certificate. We can help them find the right contact.

How fast does the insurance company pay?

It varies. Once the insurer has a complete claim, many are paid within days or a few weeks. Claims in the first two years of a policy can take longer because the insurer may review the application.

What happens if I move to another state?

Your policy generally stays in force anywhere in the United States at the same premium. Give your insurer your new address.

What if I change my mind after buying?

Every state requires a free look period after the policy is delivered. If you cancel within it, the insurer refunds the premiums you paid.
